THEATRE CREATOR, ARTIST AND WRITER

About Claren

“I’m a queer multidisciplinary artist from Calgary based in Toronto. I direct, write plays and poetry, paint and draw, submit a lot of grants and balance a lot of budgets.

I love good design— from a beautiful tea cup to a maximalist outfit to a fully staged production. I love art that dives into the mess of humanity and embraces nuance, dissonance and discomfort. I love stories that challenge my own perspectives and introduce me to unfamiliar experiences. Across all mediums, I love metaphor, visual and rhythmic composition and dynamism. I love to work collaboratively and ambitiously, supporting others to accomplish big things.

In both my personal and professional life, I focus on deep listening, compassion and flexibility. This also impacts my politics, and I bring an [ever developing] intersectional awareness to my pursuit of antiracism and feminism within my practice.

When I’m not making art, I’m roasting chickpeas, tending the garden and teaching teenagers math on zoom.”
